AS Roma
As Jose Mourinho wore out his welcome after three turbulent years, AS Roma turned into one of its own as a replacement: former midfielder Daniele De Rossi, Roma born and bred, who has spent 18 years wearing Roma's red uniforms, Coppa Italia winner and a FIFA World Cup winner with Italy in 2006.
In his first season, De Rossi led his beloved Roma to the semi finals of the UEFA Europa League. By the end of the 2023-24 season, the has announced the De Rossi's appointment will become official as full time.
Roma does not have the resources of other Seria A giants, so big name signings are not expected. Rather, Roma has the appeal of one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and playing in sometime a capacity crowd in the Stadio Olimpico.
AS Roma is one of the well-known teams, in Serie A, the top Italian football league. The AS in their name is an abbreviation of Sportiva Roma, which simply means Sport Association. The club was formed by the merging of three older clubs, and AS Roma itself is now over 90 years old. The team has spent every season in the top league, other than the single 1951-52 season.
They play in a red and yellow strip socks leading to their nickname “The Yellow and Reds”, or I Giallorossi in Italian. Football sporting event tickets are very popular with the Italian clubs, and numerous fans often watch their teams play. Fortunately, Roma plays their home matches at the Stadio Olimpico, which seats over 72,000 people – more than enough space for even the most popular teams.
As a successful club, AS Roma always looked promising in any match. The team has won Serie A three times in total, but the time periods between each victory are quite large. Their first victory was in the 1941-42 season, and their second followed 41 years later in the 1982-83 season. The third titles came a little quicker, just 18 years later, in the 2000-01 season. Last minute sports tickets may have been a necessity for this victory – the league victory was only confirmed on the last day of the season when Roma AS beat Parma 3-1.
In the years between these victories, AS Roma fans were looking for sports tickets to see their heroes compete in losing efforts in the finals of both the 1983-84 European Cup and the 1990-91 UEFA Cup. There was no chance to buy sports tickets online back then!
The lesser-known Fairs Cup was added to the Roma trophy cabinet in 1961, along with the Anglo-Italian cup in 1972, but their greatest cup victories have been in the Coppa Italia, which they have won 9 times. The “Supercoppa Italia” is a single match played between the winners of Serie A and the Coppa Italia, usually just before the start of the next season. AS Roma have won this cup twice, putting them in joint fifth place of all time with Napoli. Only Juventus, Milan, Internazionale, and Lazio have won more.
In 2017, Francesco Totti was added to the AS Roma Hall of Fame. He joined the youth team back in 1989 and progressed to the senior squad in 1992. He stayed there for the entire run of his career, retiring in 2017 after making over 600 appearances. During this period, he played for the Italian national team and won the 2006 FIFA World Cup with them. He is now club director at Roma.
